my first 24 hours being alternative

this is my first 24 hours using ubuntu 8.04. it even installs straight from my vista laptop! no partitions no messy changes to my vista system. if you've always been curious and don't wanna risk losing anything from your current pc, this is the choice to go.

next up, test out wine so i can play sims 2 in ubuntu itself.

the quickest update in months / command and conquer / xara extreme pro

his pikachu

getting to know someone. who likes cute stuffs. heh.

night scene by the road

well the nokia e51 don't really have the best night scene camera. but then again, i got the e51 not for its camera's abilities (or lack thereof).

Command and Conquer 3

ordered this via vpost on sunday night, and the friendly postman delivered it this morning. woot!!!

testng with xara extreme pro

last but not least. this software is "adobe photoshop + illustrator + indesign + fireworks + flash" all rolled into one! and its really spiffy! just conceptualizing a page spread took me less than a minute. something i'd normally take half an hour with adobe cs3. just obtained xara extreme pro this morning too, but i've yet to actually play around with its features, but i'd think its a great alternative. or at least for the features i'd think i'd use very often.

ok. so that wraps up my life's update for the past month or two. hrmmm... i guess i've been pretty boring lately. life is mundane. 3 weeks into my 12 month plan.

ganbatte~!!!

safari 3.1 and a little apple a day

Safari 3.1 and iTunes on my pc

but, the fact that it uses so much of memory resource... i'm not sure if that's a good thing. especially if compared to firefox which uses 1/4 of that amount of resource.

Safari is a memory hog?

and to verify my suspicion, i fired up ie7, safari, and firefox. loaded up all the same pages. typical user kind of websites. youtube, search portal, google, online forum, hardwarezone, facebook etc, and the results are pretty much self explanatory.

Comparing Safari IE7 and Firefox

so why should i make safari my default browser?

well i don't think i would. it doesn't offer me the ease of use like firefox. but when it comes to online banking, i have to use ie7 for dbs/posb, since firefox and safari can't seem to open dbs/posb online banking page. (firefox can't open dbs/posb, uob, fairpriceplus so i don't use it for internet banking) but at least safari opens up ntuc's fairpriceplus online banking (since ie7 hangs whenever i try it). well at least that's the short term solution.

crap. why can't everyone just make it easier for us to access websites from any browser in the first place.

Scribd / or the one with the spring mattress bed

a good example would be if i want to share with you a brochure that i've seen online in a public space. and instead of sending you a large file via email, or post a pdf file which you may not be able to view, i could simply send you a link.

currently, i'm looking out for a nice big comfy bed. and i have some ideas from ikea. you can view the brochure by clicking this link.

scribd

the idea behind scribd is to share all the documents that everyone may have lying around in their pcs.

google map on symbian gmail on symbian gmail on symbian

google maps is zippy on 3g... but at the rate of downlaods per refresh, its only worth it with an unlimited dataplan. or at least with wifi, sans the location based / triangulation stuffs.

gmail is a definite must now that wifi is easily available. heh, will backtrack [info]stingerx's past postings on symbian stuffs hehehe for anything nice and free.

:-P

definitely very happy with the purchase of the samsung duos d880 for baby and myself a nokia e51. now with a symbian device, i can actually do my reading from that tiny little screen~!!!

no need to wait for the apple iphone. not until there's 3g and all that.

e ink / the one with the whole galaxy in his hand

Readius - concept half open

click for a larger view, apparently they used douglas adam's hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy. how apt that there's a hint of what is to come.

coming from my earlier post about the kindle the only alternative initially was the cybook gen3 by bookean (for its compactness and mobi/prc file support).

however, for USD$299 if i act now, i can get the hanlin v3 by jinke. according to my email exchanges with their marketing/sales the future firmware/software updates for the v3 is set to make the hanlin v3 more attractive, albeit the made in china perception.

Readius - concept fully open

alternatives. day 5.

hard disk crash? day 5. deeper scanning

unfortunately it wasn't able to recover 100% of the 2 (out of 5) partitions which it is able to recognise. however, it seems there's a possibility it might be able to access the hard disk and bypassing its filesystems altogether, using the alternative tool PhotoRec, which came along with Test Disk. when i did try PhotoRec, it was able to uncover some images but the rest of the hard disk will take another 300 odd hours. 12 days? let's see if i can find any other alternative first. but at least, it looks like all is not lost. think i need to dig a little deeper. *croses fingers*

hard disk crash? day 4. Black_Pearl_I and Black_Pearl_II lunch pose~!!!

on the other hand. decided to add another 320gb WD external harddisk. aptly named after the first external hdd. had a great time with my team at a buffet lunch yesterday. apparently another patron sitting across us overheard me saying "...fat lady behind us..." while we're taking pics, heh. minus karma points for me.

salvaging. day 4.

Test Disk 6.8

at the very least, Test Disk 6.8, a freeware opensource utility, is letting me access some parts of the nearly unuseable hard disk. basically windows is not recognising the internal hard disk at all (I/O error of some sort, seems like its a physical mulfunction) which was why neither Spin Rite or getdataback is able to do any miracles. now out of the 5 partitions, 2 logical partitions can be identified (and at least i can get back to my Heroes), which leaves the 3 remaining extended partitions in hard disk limbo. i am quite resigned to having the hard disk replaced if nothing else can do the trick.

pray that the remaining 3 extended partitions can be recovered too. thanks for the leads to those other tools/utilities that everyone has helped pointed out.

between this and the IRA issue, the latter should be making me more concerned, but i guess Heroes addiction is a very big deal to me. i'm not exactly sure what options i do have (so much for being naive years back), but the phone conversation yesterday gave me some notion of hope.

leopard

well at least i could have a look at the contents in the .dmg file. but on the other hand, what i'd really need is some kind soul who'd let me burn a 7gb or so dual layer dvd from your mac?

have been suffering some form of sleeplessness. even though work is at 8am, i can only get to sleep at 5am. for the past few months.

and on another hand, now there's 3.

ps, dear shah and sham. i'll definitely turn up for the wedding end month.

i'm happy to conclude that it looks a whole lot nicer on windows vista. amongst other things.

Scrybe Planner Scrybe Thoughtpad

beta testing on scrybe. another web 2.0 application. pretty neat.

also for those who are intending to get that new ipod touch. i can't seem to find any info if it has any pda like function. but in case it does not have. guess what? safari + scrybe = pda !!! well i think. so if you care to buy that new ipod thingie. get a scrybe account too! (wait, but its flash based, so will it still work on iphone's / ipod's safari?)

but in order to have flash working, maybe something like gnash can help for the meantime. purportedly works here.

on the other hand, flash support of some kind is bound to appear on safari devices. partly because microsoft's offering of silverlight might mean something. well actually, flash support will more than likely to appear soon.

testing online storage

hard drive in a loincloth.
testing online storage for files. now i can share pdf / zip / etc files and no time limit (the only limitation is the 10mb filesize and the monthly 10gb download bandwidth.)

this entry was (partly) posted directly from box.net's online interface. now that i've settled on an online storage system for file distribution, (between this and amazon's S3, via jungledisk.com, i think i'd stick to this one for the time being. anyone knows of a similar service from google or yahoo perhaps?)

the test file is located below. so if you're curious just click. no harm will come your way.

prompts

virtual pc 2007

look ma. a pc in a pc!

so thanks to [info]ellcrius for spotting the error, which prompted me to figure out how else i can get ie6 to work on vista. i've already known of the multiple ie workaround but it just doesn't work with vista. and i don't want to go through the hassle of dual booting my system, which means i have to log out and log in just to have a quick check.

so i'm really grateful that i stumbled on the virtual pc option purely by chance. and a whole lot of googling. although what i am surprised about is why i didn't stumble on it sooner? perhaps its not a popular means of getting ie6. but... i guess when one is rather desperate for a solution...

on the other hand, i love the idea behind the beryl project. anyone willing to... spare me their old laptops? you can see the beryl project in the videos below. now how's that for flashy desktop. i am so wanting to pimp my... pc...

on another front, this is a great online photo magazine, at http://jpgmag.com/. you can download some of their past issues from the website itself.

its really cool and a worthy read for an alternative take on the imaging world.

there's also another photographic website that adrian introduced me today, where the images are user-submitted polaroids, located at http://plrds.com/.
